First impressions are very important in life and in sales. It’s often hard to break a person’s judgement of you after you leave them with a horrible first impression. You only get one chance at this so we’ll discuss how to make it a god one.
From afar
People judge you based on looks, no matter what they say. If you see someone that looks threatening you’re probably going to think to yourself, “That person looks pretty scary.” That is part of a first impression, the impression from afar. If you have a threatening body language or depressed body language, people are going to take notice. Looking like you just rolled out of bed will leave a bad first impression also. Look like you put some thought and effort into how you look today and people will notice.
Not only do you have to make a good first impression from afar, but so does your store or company. If it looks untidy with dust bunnies on the floor, boxes everywhere and just looking like a total disaster, you’re really hurting your sales. It’s a business, how are people going to trust you with their money if you can’t even get on top of keeping your business clean?
Personal Space
This is when you draw your customer in closer to you but haven’t said anything yet. This impression is still based on appearance. Do you have some food stuck in your teeth? Do you smell like an ashtray, or some other form of foul odour is coming from you?
First words out of your mouth
We’ve discussed never to open with, “Hi, can I help you?” If the first words out of your mouth are offensive or some form of sound I can guarantee your customer will run in the opposite direction, You should open with an open ended question and something unique and creative enough to start a conversation.
